1] Site Selection
Space:
- Any balcony or window grills, terrace with a space where at least 1 or 2 pots can be kept.
Sunlight requirement:
- Balconies of windows facing East or west are better.
- For terrace plant in north-south direction.
- For vegetables at least 4 hours direct sunlight.
Drainage:
- Use plate under pots or grow bags.
- For terrace, make sure waterproofing is done.
Field Sanitation:
- Clean your balcony or wash existing plant with soap water to make sure no pre-living insect can harm vegetable crops.
- Clean terrace or balcony floor with bleach powder.
- Wash plants with soap water.


2] Understanding Soil:

Ideal potting mixture:
- Soil+ vermicompost/ compost + cocopeat in ratio of 3:2:1
- That means 3 part of soil, 2 part of vermicompost/ compost and 1 part of cocopeat.
- Add 1 part of neem powder or neem cake if available or ant powder max. 5 gm in each pot. This is totally optional.
- Black soil can also be use as it is, without any addition.
3] Pot Selection:
Type of pots:
- Earthen pots
- Plastic pots
- Grow Bags
Size requirement of pot:
- 9 inch height: Okra, Cluster bean(gawar), French bean, cucumber, bitter gourd (karela)
- 12 inch height: Tomato, brinjal, chilli, capsicum

Why grow bags are best for vegetable growing?
Grow bags are made up of HDPE material that is High Density Poly-Ethylene material. These bags comes in various thickness and sizes. Preferred thickness is 200 GSM. Size depends upon vegetable crops.

4]Seed Selection:

Quality check:
- Check back side of seed packet.
- Check for truthful label.
- Check for expiry date.
Disease & pest free seeds:
- Seeds should be clean.
- Insect infected, infected with mold or old seeds should be discarded.
